Food is essential for us as human beings as it provides vital nutrients for survival. To keep things fundamental, understand that food helps the body function. It plays a role in our physical, social and mental well-being. Yet, many people pay little attention to nutrition overall and don’t understand the basic building blocks. All food is comprised of calories a from a combination of elements from protein, carbohydrates, and fats. Water, and vitamins/minerals don’t supply energy in the form of calories, but it is absolutely vital to the human body in varying amounts.
To understand how what you eat affects your body, you need to become familiar with the basics:
A calorie: is a unit of energy present in all food. Fats contain 9 calories per gram, while carbohydrates and proteins contain 4 calories per gram.
Food comprises nutrients and can be divided into two categories: macronutrients and micronutrients.
Macronutrients: Macronutrients are those nutrients that the body needs in large amounts. This includes carbohydrates (carbs), protein, and fat. These provide the body with energy to fuel the body and play specific roles in maintaining health.
Micronutrients: Food also supplies micronutrients or vitamins and minerals. Micronutrients are those nutrients that the body needs in smaller amounts. They serve a variety of critical functions to ensure the body operates optimally.
Additionally, there’s water. Water, of course, is key to all of your body’s functions. Your body weight is mostly water, including your brain, blood, and lungs.
